Dental Care

Fryeburg Veterinary Hospital is very proud to offer high quality periodontal therapy for your dog or cat using state of the art dental equipment. This entails a comprehensive dental scaling, charting of the teeth, and polishing the teeth. Any teeth with problem areas are radiographed using digital dental radiography to guide our periodontal therapy. Seventy-five percent of the tooth lies under the gum line so dental radiography is essential in diagnosing a problem and formulating a treatment plan. It may be necessary to remove damaged, loose, or infected teeth at the time of the cleaning or at another time depending on your pet's situation. Some teeth require surgical extraction by a procedure called gingival flap. Each of our surgeons has been trained in this techniqe. For these procedures your pet will need to be anesthetized for the safety and comfort of all involved.

Patients are kept cozy using a warm air blanket called the Bairhugger. This device encompasses a light blanket that lies on top of your pet blowing warmed air around their body. This helps your pet maintain a normal body temperature during the procedure which is especially important in our older patients. Preoperative bloodwork as well as monitoring equipment helps us ensure as safe of an anesthetic experience as possible for our patients.

Homecare is an integral part of keeping your 4-legged friends teeth clean and healthy. The most effective way of maintaining your pet's oral health is daily tooth brushing with doggie/kitty toothpaste and a toothbrush. Just sixty seconds every day can make a significant difference in your pet's mouth and breath. We also have other products available for those whose pets will not allow brushing. Doggie/kitty breath malodor is not normal! If you notice that your pet has halitosis you should call your veterinarian and set up an appointment for an oral examination right away.
